Grow your own House

Attach an image:

When a truly big storm hits Northern Australia, sometimes ships are caught nowhere near a harbour.

In that situation, the ship’s captain will often seek out the nearest mangrove swamp and tie the boat up to them.

The mangroves are never wiped out in any type of weather. Trees that bond together are strong. Strong enough to protect a ship, and strong enough to build houses from.

One of the new theories about building houses is that you don’t need to kill and process the trees before you live in them.

Typically we think of houses as things that cost money, take up time, take up energy and deteriorate.

The good designers of the Fab Tree Hab have come up with a model that grows bigger and better with age, requires very little up-keep and produces food and energy.

Saplings can be manipulated and woven to form structures. The process, known as Pleaching, has been around since the medieval times, but could revolutionise the modern world of construction.

Together, we can pleach for the Sky. Pleach to the converted. Fight them on the pleaches. Pleach a dog new tricks. Be a manic street pleacher. Pleach goddamit, Pleach!

Other terms for pleaching include botanic weaving, and messing with trees.

Whatever the term, the results are all very good. Could you imagine picking a couple of pears and an orange off your walls for dessert, then reaching up to the ceiling to grab a couple of passion fruits? It isn’t as fanciful as it sounds.

The model for the Fab Tree Hab incorporates food bearing plants, and actually grows using the waste of the inhabitants.

This is a real life version of the house featured in Hansel and Gretel, except the food is healthier and the tenants less evil (hopefully).

The use of other materials is minimal and environmentally sound.

Note to the reader...
If you are as inspired about this idea as I am, don’t type 'Grow Houses' into a search engine. What you will find is many tips on how to grow marijuana indoors. (Unless you are into that kind of thing)
