A Gatordade-soaked onion can charge an iPod. The beverage's electrolytes mix with the cells of the onion to create electricity. How exciting is that?
The thing that amazes me is that a standard white onion can easily absorb a cup of liquid.
Emergency onions should be sent to places of severe flooding. Once laden with water, they can be sent to draught stricken areas for squeezing, thus replenishing the land. Then they can be sautéed with garlic and made into a nice tofu curry for the masses.

Hooray for onions, the saviours of the world. Packed full of vitamins, they are one of the oldest vegetables known to mankind.
Chopping Onions
As onions are sliced, cells are broken, releasing an irritable gas. The gas causes our eyes to water and to be sore. Some of the ways to prevent this age-old problem are:
• Leave the route of the onion intact. There is a higher concentration of enzymes located in that area.
• Chop them under running water.
• Chop them when they are cold.
This is the absolute best way to stop onions messing with your eyes, I guarantee it works:
I have tried to chop onions whilst wearing swimming goggles, and it made no significant difference. I then tried it using a Scuba Mask, and my eyes felt brilliant. A scuba mask blocks your nose too. Only problem is that you look and feel ridiculous.
Onions and Compost
Despite my ex-housemate’s frequent protestations, onions do make very good compost. Chopping the bulbs up will speed up the process, and also prevent them from re-growing. Same goes for potatoes.
Apart from being fuel for batteries and people alike, onions have many different household uses:
• If you suffer from Athlete’s Foot, rub onion juice on the afflicted area.
• You can boil red onion skins to make a red dye.
• You can boil yellow onion skins to make a yellow dye.
• If your windscreen is constantly misting up, you can wipe the inside with half an onion. (making your car smell funny in the process)
• You can eradicate the odour of paint from within a cupboard or closet by placing a sliced onion inside it for several hours.
• If a person is feeling faint, try holding a cut onion under their nose to re-invigorate them.
Did you know this about the onion?....
• Onions are noted in the Bible, and the Holy Quran, as one of the foods most longed for by the Israelites after leaving Egypt for the Promised Land.
• Tissue from onions is frequently used in science education to demonstrate microscope usage, because they have particularly large cells which are readily observed even at low magnifications.
• When eaten raw, onions may irritate the stomach. When that happens, milk is effective in neutralizing the effects.
• In Caananite Bronze Age settlements, traces of onion remains were found alongside fig and date stones dating back to 5000 BC.
Jain Food
Members of the Indian Jainism religion are forbidden to eat onions, carrots and garlic. Dairy products are not on the extensive banned list.
Handy Tip....
Onions can be used as a substitute for garlic when deterring vampires.
