Blade Runner ELECTRIC CARS!!!
Based in Castlemaine, Victoria, Blade Electric Vehicles retrofit the Hyundai Getz to run on electric drive for sustainable urban driving. You plug it in to a standard household socket to recharge and it costs - wait for it - about 1.00 per 100km to run!!!
Air-con? Check. Power steering? Check. Airbags? Check. This car has it all, excepting the carbon and particulate emissions! It does 0 - 60 kph in 7.5 seconds and cruises comfortably at 110kph so it's just like driving any other car. It seats four and is perfect for city driving, with a single charge range of about 120km.
These electric cars are a staggering 90% efficient (compare that to the pitiful 22% efficiency of an internal combustion engine - 78% of the energy from the fuel you burn is wasted). When you recharge, the Blade Runner Mk II stores the electrical energy in a bank of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, which are hidden under the floor in the back of the car. It runs with an electric motor which is extremely quiet to boot - the only sound is the purring of fans.
Okay - the bottom line. You supply the Getz, and then its $35,200 for the conversion, including GST. It does make it cost close to $50,000 for a runabout that you can buy for $14,000 in its petrol incarnation, but when you factor in the running and maintenance costs, you'll come out close to even over the life of the car. They have finance available.
