Two warm fuzzys for the price of one!
Recently we introduced you to Kiva.org, is an amazing website which allows you to provide very small (no interest) loans to the world's poorest people so that they can start their own small businesses. Today we're looking at a group of Ugandan EarthMums who are looking for loan partners to expand their recycled clothing businesses!
The leader of the group applying for the loan is Florence Aginda, a 35 year old mother of three. She sells used clothing and is requesting a loan to expand her business. Three other women join Florence in this loan group - Topista Namayanja, who also wants to expand her recycled clothing business and Amina Nakaze and Rose Nakwasi who have retail shops and want to purchase more items to sell.
If you knew a local group of mums who needed a leg up with their recycled clothing business, you'd probably want to help them out, right? But with all the other financial demands of family, most mums wouldn't have a whole lot to contribute to the cause. The great thing with helping people in the third world is that your dollar goes so much further. For example $25 is about what we'd spend on a bread and milk run to Woolies, but it's around about what these women earn in from a week's work. With a spare $25 you can make a difference to the lives of these Ugandan mums, and by encouraging the reuse of retired garments, you'll be helping the planet as well. It's a pretty cheap way to get a double dose of warm fuzzy feeling - good value, I reckon! And the best thing is that you'll get the $25 back within twelve months, and you can do it all again!
