Green star for green companies
One of the hardest things to do as a conscientious Mum, is to choose the right products at the supermarket. We have so many things to think about - nutrition and price being at the top of the list!
And now, it is more important than ever that we think about whether or not these products are good for the environment. These are a few things I have thought of to look at for...
Local goods - the more local, the better. I have put this before organic because some of hte top scientists agree that it a conventionally grown local product is better for the environment than an imported organic one.
Why? Because of the energy it takes to travel. Organics are better for the soil and is a much more sustainable way of farming, but if your organic apricots are being flown in from Turkey, then the plane fuel is much worse.
So, buy Australian first!
Organic goods - Better for you and better for the soil, organics are the way to go, if they are locally grown.
Less packaging - the more packaging, the more energy it has taken to produce the product, even if it is using recycled materials.
But if it has to be packaged then...
Paper is best. Why? Cos you are growing a tree to make the packaging, rather than taking oil from the ground. this is kind of controversial, but it seems to be agreed that we need to grow more trees.
An even better way to know which products to buy would be to have a 'green star' rating like whitegoods do. You can check out our campaign to Woollies to that effect.
