More Mowing tips
My recent research into green lawn mowing uncovered some great tips for mowing your lawn into a masterpiece.
These tips are courtesy of the.lawn.mower - A disturbing devotion to all things lawn mower. [While you are there check out the ink lawn mower for a giggle!]
Adjust your mower blades up to about 10 cm or so, depending on the grass. Longer grass shades out weeds, and retains more moisture.
Never remove greater than one-third of a grass blade. If you over-cut your lawn you risk destruction of the growing tip. Adhering to the one-third rule ensures the grass will be able to continue to grow both blade and root. This rule is especially important if you have been a bit lazy with your lawn maintenance. Severe cut backs will shock the grass system.
Dry grass cuts much easier than wet grass. If you cut your grass when wet you are more likely to get an uneven mow. Cutting only dry grass is gentler to the grass and you will avoid clogging the mower.
Make sure your mower is prepared for the job. Take care of any maintenance work before you start to mow. Check that the blades sharp, clean and properly balanced. Ensure that the mower running smoothly.
Begin mowing at a steady, even pace. This provides you with an even cut. Continue cutting at the same pace but combine it with an overlapping of each cut. This ensures your cut remains constant across the lawn. Do not vary this pattern while you cut. However, change the specific route you follow and the direction, regularly. This will prevent compacted grass. Moreover, grass grows in the pattern in which you cut it. If you alter the pattern, you ensure it will grow upright.
Once you are finished, clean your mower. Don't let the clippings sit in your catcher - put them in your compost immediately to prevent damage to your mower.
